Background Summary

Started in cellular communications in 1983, selling the first cell phones three months before service made its live debut in Connecticut. Five years in telecommunications management at IBM-Rolm-Siemens Telecommunications Division, where as senior sales representative for Fortune 500 companies, specialized in PBX, voice messaging, automated attendant and IVR technologies. Early retirement/buyout in 1991.

One-year sabbatical. Studied Yoga, meditation and climbing in preparation for the life-long dream of trekking the Himalayas and climbing Mount Everest. Magically, wound up a guest of the Russian Expedition and became the first American to climb Mt. Everest with the Russian team – reaching “Camp 2” at 24,500-feet above sea level and only 4,535-feet from the peak, without needing auxiliary oxygen.

Landed back in CT in 1992 as a sales-and-marketing manager for a large regional medical laboratory headquartered in Bridgeport (until the company was sold to National Health Laboratories). In 1994, worked in the development of venture capital and bridge funding, focused in Biotechnology, raising over $2.5M for a diagnostic testing company.

Self taught computers and the (then) new technology of the Internet. Worked as an independent consultant on Web development strategies, goals and objectives with over a dozen medium and large companies; including Bic’s Sports Division and Sobe Beverage. Also worked with United Technologies/Otis Elevator Division as a PDA/handheld computer consultant.

Utilizing a strong business connection with the handheld computer company, Psion Inc. USA and Psion PLC UK, forged a strategic alliance with Microtech International Corp. in Branford, CT for the “CompactFlash” memory, which was used in the Psion handheld and would become the memory of choice for the digital camera.

In 1997, co-founded the e-commerce business (www.d-store.com), based around Psion handheld computers, which expanded into one of the first sites on the Internet that sold digital cameras and other digital products, and – using guerrilla networking and marketing techniques – took an initial $20 investment to $3.25M in less than three years.
